"Ashland's Future"

The April show at Nuwandart showcases the talents of our local youth. The exhibit, which features the art of Middle and High school students, opened First Friday, April 5th, and is being held in conjunction with a new art education program at The Grove, sponsored by Nuwandart, Community Works and the Ashland School District.

"My vision was an art show for the children, to get them involved in art and more things than just video games," explained Bryna Stalarow, a volunteer at both The Grove and Nuwandart, and the facilitator of this exhibit. "From there, it evolved into these classes." Stalarow is involved with the art program at The Grove, where she oversees classes, including a mural workshop and a workshop on mosaics and collages.

The program has several goals, Stalarow said, like "providing an atmosphere and a venue for youth to express themselves and amplify their voice through the arts." Another goal is to "create an experience that will honor youth and be a catalyst for professional creative development." A third goal is "to give the Ashland community the opportunity to support young artists of Ashland."

The workshops are taught by volunteer instructors. Artists Toby Linwood and Josh Careon teach the mural workshop, and artists Michelle Hardy and Abram Ramal Katz teach mosaic and collage making. Stalarow is involved is each class and helps instruct the instructors.

The mural class created a mural for the exhibit. It contains four themes, including the environment, the self, culture and The Grove itself, Stalarow said. It is painted on a 17 foot canvas, and is on display with other art created in workshops at The Grove.

Workshops are open to Middle school and High school students. For more information, contact Matthew McClenahan at The Grove 541-488-1900.
